Thanks to St Andrew’s and St George’s West Church allowing us a table in their tent we were able to reach quite a number of people at Heart and Soul, the majority who had never heard of us! The event is held in Princes St. Gardens on the first Sunday of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh. Our colourful new banner helped to bring people along and ask who we were.
For many people ‘Accessible Church’ just means the building, so it was good to be able to share with others some of the resources that we now have. The clear signs were thought to be a great idea. There was interest in the material for the hard of hearing. We were able to send a couple of people to the Prospects Tent as they had never heard about it, but wanted to do something for people with learning disabilities.
We had a good turnout of helpers from our committee. Mingling with the crowd and distributing information that way went down well. We now have some new people to add to the mailing list.
Definitely going to events is one of the most effective ways of spreading the word that SCDG can help equip churches with useful information, and for people with disabling conditions they too can find out what is available to make worship more accessible for them.
It was a tremendous service with a renenactment of the last supper and some wonderful hymns with signing by Rev Rosie Addis and lots of bubbles.
